New Puppy Checklist: Everything You’ll Need For A New Puppy!

If you’re planning to bring home a new puppy, then it’s important to make sure you have all of the essentials so you can get off to a great start.

Of course, while not everything in this guide is essential from day one, there’s no denying how much smoother the first few weeks will be if you aim to complete this ‘new puppy checklist’ before you bring home your new member of the family.

In this guide, you’ll find an in-depth overview of the main things you’ll need to buy for your new puppy – so let’s take a closer look at the recommendations we have for you.

# 1 – Food

The first thing you’ll need to obtain will be a reasonable supply of quality, puppy-focused dog food.

These days, this can be more complicated than ever, simply because there are so many different brands of dog food available. Fortunately, we’ve covered this subject from many angles in the past – so it’s definitely worth taking a glance over the other guides we’ve published on the topic.

But in particular, it’s a good idea to purchase a puppy-oriented brand of food that’s strictly focused on the nutritional needs of a puppy, which will often feature added nutrients to support healthy brain and eye development, along with enough calories to support a growing puppy’s energy needs.

We have two guides that address this topic, so it’s well worth beginning your search with these two articles entitled ‘the best dog food for puppies‘ and ‘the best dog food for large breed puppies‘.

# 2 – Treats

In addition to quality dog food, it’s often a good idea to invest in some tasty treats as well. These can be very useful during the first few training sessions when you’ll be teaching your dog important commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘come’. Of course, they’re also great for indulging your puppy occasionally, too!

We have a guide that shows you all of the best treats for under $25 (and the vast majority of them are much cheaper than this, too!)

# 3 – Treat pouch

While having a treat pouch is optionable, it’s certainly useful for keeping all of your dog’s treats safe and secure in one place. Fortunately, these treat pouches are very affordable, so it won’t cut into your overall budget too much at all.

Our favorite treat pouch at the moment as to be the PetSafe Treat Pouch Sport, because the hinged opening makes it very easy to access the treats and the fully adjustable( and detachable) belt means it’s easy to wear. Alternatively, you can just as easily attach it to your belt. This makes it perfect for training sessions, and it’s also incredibly convenient for carrying a few extras, such as keys, clickers, or even a phone.

# 5 – Leash

Walking your new puppy for the first time is always great fun, but you will need a quality leash before you leave the house!

In most cases, it’s well worth familiarizing your puppy with the leash beforehand, and you can teach many of the basic leash-oriented commands without leaving your house or backyard.

There are many different kinds of leash available, so it’s worth examining all of the different options to find the one you like the best.

We’ve also written a number of useful guides that list several of the best leashes within each category, so here they are:

# 6 – Collar

Every dog needs a collar, so this will be another must-buy for your new puppy. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be an expensive purchase at all, and you’ll find dozens of suitable options available for very reasonable prices online.

We have a few guides dedicated to this topic, but here’s a quick overview which features some of the best options:

 # 7 – ID tags

Something that goes hand in hand with your puppy’s collar will be the ID tags, which are very important for letting people know where to find you if your dog happens to go missing.

It’s well worth paying a few extra dollars for personalized engraving, and many options online will give this to you as standard.

We have a dedicated guide which will show you several of the best ID tags for under $25, so it’s worth checking that guide for more details.

# 8 – Harness

For many breeds of dog, a harness can prove to be the better option than a collar / leash combination. Not only does a harness give you better control over your dog, but they are also much more supportive, as well as being gentler on your dog’s sensitive areas, such as the neck.

In particular, a harness is often the better choice for a small dog, and we have a dedicated guide which covers many of the best dog harnesses for small dogs.

# 9 – Poop bags

When you’re taking your puppy for walks outside, then at some point they’re going to poop – so you’ll need a quality poop bag to clean up after them.

There are many different sizes and designs available, and some are even scented as well, which is always an added bonus.

One of the best value poop bag products on the market has to be the AmazonBasics brand, which allows you to purchase up to 900 bags at a very affordable price, making them one of the best-value solutions overall – especially if you’re looking for a simple, no-frills poop bag that gets the job done.

# 10 – Bed

Every dog needs a comfortable bed to lie in, so it’s certainly worth spending a few extra dollars to buy them something extra special. You’ll find beds in many different sizes and styles, and some of the best ones even come with memory foam for added comfort – although these are often best suited for larger breeds and older dogs.

It’s also worth buying a bed that offers removable covers, waterproof materials, or a bed that’s small enough to be machine washable, as this will go a long way towards making your life easier if your puppy has an ‘accident’ in their own bed.

We’ve written many guides on the subject of beds, but here’s an overview of the ones that are most relevant to puppies.

# 13 – Cleaning products

Cleaning up after your dog will always be important, especially in the early days – as it’s wise to keep your home as clean and clear as possible so your new puppy doesn’t get their paws on something they shouldn’t have.

While you can use most kinds of standard home cleaning products to clean up any accidents in the home, it’s often worth investing in some high-quality scent remover which will come in very handy when you’re cleaning up urine stains.

It’s important to realize that your new puppy will have a very keen sense of smell, and when it comes to choosing where to urinate, they will often be drawn to locations that ‘smell’ like urine. So even after you have cleaned up your dog’s accident in the home, there’s a good chance that your puppy will still detect the scent – especially if it’s soaked up into a carpet.

With this in mind, we recommend using some form of stain and scent remover. One of the best products is Rocco & Roxie Professional Enzyme Formula, and many people we’ve recommended this to have found it a real life saver when house training a new puppy – so it’s definitely worth trying if you want the house training process to be quick and easy!

# 14 – Toys

Every puppy likes to play with toys, so it’s vital to provide them with a variety of toys to keep them happy and entertained – especially if you don’t want them to start playing with things they shouldn’t!

Fortunately, there are many toys available for puppies these days, so it won’t be too much trouble to pick a wide selection that offers plenty of different textures and features that are sure to keep your puppy entertained.

Here’s a selection of the guides we’ve written which focus on quality toys for your dog.

The best dog rope toys

The best Kong dog toys

# 15 – Stair gates

In most cases, it’s best to keep your dog off the stairs – especially while they’re still growing and developing. Of course, this point is especially important for smaller breeds who could easily injure themselves while bounding up and down the stairs.

With this in mind, it can often be useful to fit a stair gate to prevent this problem – so here’s an option that should do the job perfectly for most forms of stair case.

# 16 – Furniture covers

If you want to keep your furniture nice and clean while owning a dog, then buying a simple machine washable furniture cover is certainly worth the money. There’s a wide variety of covers available, and it shouldn’t be too much trouble to find something that fits in with your current furniture while giving it the vital protection it needs from stray hair and a playful new puppy!
